Welcome to the Club House Social Scene
Throughout the year the Social Committee are busy behind the scenes putting together a varied programme of social events and Thursday evening talks which are held during the Autumn and Winter months when there is very little activity on the water.
2016 has been another very busy year socially. Liz once again produced a superb calendar of Thursday evening talks for 2016/17 with the best attendance ever of over 80 members turning out for the Meteorological Office talk given by Andy Yeatman in November.
The ‘Totally Tina’ Tina Turner tribute band evening in October was probably the highlight of the year. 70 members and friends enjoyed a two course meal followed by the excellent cabaret. The club house was rocking to all the best loved Tina Turner tunes and many members took to their feet and danced the night away. These tribute band evenings have now proved to be very successful so the Social Committee are currently researching possible acts for the next show ….. so watch this space.
December once again was very busy. The annual Christmas Draw usually held during the Town Band Carol evening was brought forward to be held during the interval on the Members’ Entertainment evening which followed the popular Happy Hour. We believe we have at last found the most efficient method of conducting this draw which went without a hitch. The first prize of the Christmas Hamper filled with £70 worth of goodies was won by Chris and John West. John was tickled pink! Again, it was satisfying that the majority of the winners were present on the night.
The entertainment was once again a real treat with the acts provided by Ladies Ashore, the Social Committee, Neil and Dave Oliver, Trevor B-J, Derek and Alan, Neville and his band and other musical acts, all ably linked by our compère for the evening Mike Anning. Mike had us all splitting our sides with his droll rapport and very amusing jokes complete with the obligatory pastie. Watch out though Mike, we ladies are on the hunt for suitable ‘husband’ jokes to compete with your ‘wife’ repertoire next year!
There was a packed house for the Town Band Carol evening with everyone in full voice. Mince pies were quickly consumed and a mini draw held.
A second Happy Hour proved popular in Christmas week as was the Boxing Day Treasure Hunt and Auction, the proceeds of which were once again shared by the RNLI and the Commodore’s chosen charity.
2016 came to a close with the New Year’s Eve disco attended by a number of cadets and their parents and of course, a good smattering of ‘oldies’. In the course of the evening we discovered that Sharon our bar manager had become engaged and she received many congratulatory wishes for the future.
2017 January to April social programme
We have in fact already finalised the events list for early 2017 and it can be viewed via this link
2017 began with a well attended RNLI Quiz evening and the Ladies Ashore Friday lunch meeting where a small presentation was made by the ladies to Jenny who after more than ten years of manning the bar is leaving Saltash at the end of January to join her husband at his army base in Wiltshire. We all wished her and her family all the very best for the future.
Apart from the Thursday talks which start on the 12th January with Mark Parry from the National Marine Aquarium, the first social meal will be The Chinese New Year supper on Saturday 28th January. This is the Year of the Rooster so come along and enjoy but hurry as numbers are limited.
John our caterer continues to offer superb value Sunday lunches. His seasonal menu is on display by the hatch and on the tables. Please try to book in advance but John will always try to find room for the odd late comer.
In addition to the club social programme, the Clubhouse is sometimes used for private hire, anything from regular weekly meetings to one off celebrations. Booking forms and hire information are available from the Club Administrator or Sharon and Liz behind the bar. They can be contacted on 01752 845988.
Please be aware that as we are a members’ club, members may be elsewhere in the clubhouse during your function.
Here’s looking forward to a great sailing season but in the meantime we hope to see you at one of our events.
Best wishes from:
